Avicularia minatrix – Venezuelan Red-Stripe Pinktoe (“Red Slate”)

Avicularia minatrix is one of the few true dwarf pinktoe species in the hobby—and easily the most striking of them all. Its bold black base with vivid orange striping creates a unique, almost checkered pattern that stands out immediately. Calm, confident, and beginner-friendly, this species is a pleasure to keep and observe. What truly sets A. minatrix apart is its adaptability; when bred, the slings can be raised communally with great success. I’ve personally kept babies communally with excellent results, making this potentially the only Avicularia species known to thrive this way. High-end, visually stunning, and truly special, this is one of the finest Avicularia you can add to any collection.

🔔 Special Notices
This is a true arboreal species that thrives with vertical space, cork bark, and good airflow. For enclosure setups, feeding routines, and real-world examples of how I keep Avicularia species, visit my YouTube channel below—this is exactly how I raise mine from slings to adults.

🛠️ Care Details
🌡️ Temperature 75–85°F (24–29°C). Warmer temps promote steady growth through more frequent molts.
💧 Humidity Around 75–80% with strong ventilation. Keep substrate lightly moist but never stagnant.
🏠 Housing
Babies Small arboreal vial or enclosure ~5" tall × 2" diameter with cross-ventilation and anchor points.
Juveniles Once over ~2", upgrade to a 7–8" tall arboreal enclosure.
Adults 8" tall enclosure is plenty. Provide cork bark, foliage, and vertical webbing space.
🍽️ General Diet
Crickets and roaches (Dubia, Red Runner, Lobster). Babies take baby crickets or small roaches. If prey is too large, pre-kill it and remove leftovers. We never use pinhead crickets because they don’t provide enough protein.

⚠️ Safety Disclaimer
Safety Disclaimer: Experiencing a tarantula bite is an extremely rare occurrence, and it's important to note that there have been NO recorded fatalities due to a tarantula bite. The venom potency varies across species, with Old World tarantulas having stronger venom than their New World counterparts.

If you happen to get bitten, which is unlikely, the key is to stay calm. In most cases, the discomfort is temporary and subsides within a few minutes to a few hours. However, bites from species with more potent venom may result in symptoms lasting up to a week.

Please be aware that I cannot assume responsibility for bites. Tarantula handling should be done at your own risk. In my 13 years of experience with these creatures, I have only been bitten once, by a species with highly potent venom. While the experience was painful, the symptoms had completely disappeared after a week.

Handle tarantulas responsibly, and always prioritize your safety and the well-being of the tarantula.
