Scolopendra paradoxa 'South', commonly known as the Philippine Mint Leg Centipede, combines a dark, glossy body with striking mint-blue legs and contrasting orange antennae. Its appearance alone makes an impression, but its semi-aquatic habits and communal potential take its collector appeal even further.
A Holy Grail for the Collection:
This is a centipede for collectors looking beyond the ordinary. Cool-toned legs stand out against dark body segments, creating a dramatic contrast that makes even a brief appearance memorable. Add its unusual habitat needs and communal keeping possibilities, and 'South' becomes a compelling specialist project.
Semi-Aquatic Habitat & Feeding:
This semi-aquatic species is an excellent candidate for a paludarium, where land and water can be incorporated into an engaging naturalistic display. A paludarium is an option, not a requirement. Whatever enclosure style you choose, prioritize appropriate moisture, secure shelter, and escape prevention. It does well when offered crustaceans such as freshwater shrimp, making feeding another distinctive part of keeping this species.
Communal Keeping:
A standout option for experienced keepers interested in communal centipedes. Communal potential should not be treated as a guarantee of compatibility: monitor interactions closely and be prepared to separate animals if needed.
Temperament & Safety:
A venomous centipede for experienced keepers, not for handling. Use a secure enclosure and a planned, no-contact approach to feeding and maintenance.
