🕷️ Avicularia sp. ‘Pucallpa’ – Mardi Gras Pink Toe
One of the most visually captivating Avicularia species I’ve ever kept. The Mardi Gras Pink Toe earns its name from the bold purples, greens, and golds shimmering across its body—almost like it was painted for a festival. Native to the Ucayali region of Peru, this is a calm, curious, and beginner-friendly arboreal tarantula that makes a gorgeous addition to any collection.
🔧 Care Details
-
Temperature: Keep between 75–85°F (24–29°C). Warmer temps promote faster growth and molting.
-
Humidity: Maintain 75–80% inside the enclosure. No need to overcomplicate it—just avoid making it swampy or bone-dry.
-
Housing – Arboreal Setup:
-
Babies: Small vial (up to 5 inches tall, 2 inches wide) with good ventilation.
✅ I can include a free vial—just ask at checkout. If you don’t ask, it won’t be included. -
Juveniles (2”+): A 7–8 inch tall enclosure is ideal.
-
Adults: Go for a 12 to 16 inch tall vertical setup with plenty of climbing space and anchor points for webbing.
-
🦗 Diet Tips
I feed mine a mix of crickets and roaches—Dubia, red-runner, lobster, and hissing.
For babies, baby crickets or small roaches work best.
If you only have one feeder type, no problem. If it’s too big, just crush the head and leave it inside.
✅ Remove leftovers the next day to avoid mold.
🦎 An occasional pinky mouse or feeder lizard can be a treat, but don’t overdo it—too much calcium can cause issues with digestion and waste elimination.

⚠️ Safety Disclaimer
Experiencing a tarantula bite is an extremely rare occurrence, and it's important to note that there have been no recorded fatalities due to a tarantula bite. The venom potency varies across species, with Old World tarantulasgenerally having stronger venom than their New World counterparts. Within the Old World category, the Poecilotheriagenus is known for having particularly potent venom.
It’s crucial to approach tarantulas with respect and understanding. If you happen to get bitten—which is unlikely—the key is to stay calm. In most cases, the discomfort is mild and subsides within minutes to hours. However, bites from species with more potent venom may result in symptoms lasting up to a week. Larger tarantulas tend to carry more venom than smaller ones.
🛑 Please be aware: I cannot assume responsibility for bites. Tarantula handling should always be done at your own risk.
In my 11 years of experience with these creatures, I’ve only been bitten once—by a species with highly potent venom. It was painful, but the symptoms were completely gone after a week.
🧠 Handle tarantulas responsibly, and always prioritize your safety and the well-being of the animal.
