Phormingochilus sp. “Sabah Blue”

Phormingochilus sp. “Sabah Blue” is one of the most visually striking arboreal tarantulas from Borneo. As this species matures, it develops deep velvet tones with subtle bluish hues that really pop under good lighting. It’s fast, alert, and loves vertical cork bark retreats where it can web up a secure hide. For experienced keepers who appreciate rare Old World arboreals, this species is a true standout.

🧰 Care Details
🌡️ Temperature 75–85°F (24–29°C). Warmer temperatures typically encourage faster growth because they molt more often.
💧 Humidity Around 75–80% inside the enclosure with good ventilation. Keep substrate slightly moist but never swampy.
🏠 Housing
Babies Vial up to about 5" tall × 2" diameter with ventilation. FREE vial available at checkout if requested (not included otherwise).
Juveniles Once past ~2", upgrade to a vertical enclosure around 7–8" tall with cork bark for climbing and webbing.
Adults Adults thrive in a vertical enclosure around 12–16" tall with plenty of anchor points for webbing and a cork bark retreat.
🍽️ General Diet
Crickets + roaches (Dubia, Red Runner, Lobster). Babies eat baby crickets or baby roaches. If prey is too large, simply pre-kill it (crush the head) and leave it for them. Always remove leftovers or bolus.

For very large specimens, an occasional pinky mouse, hopper mouse, or feeder lizard can be offered very sparingly as a treat. Too much calcium can lead to constipation or pooping issues.

We never use pinhead crickets because they do not provide enough protein.

⚠️ Safety Disclaimer
Safety Disclaimer: Experiencing a tarantula bite is an extremely rare occurrence, and it's important to note that there have been NO recorded fatalities due to a tarantula bite. The venom potency varies across species, with Old World tarantulas having stronger venom than their New World counterparts.

If you happen to get bitten, which is unlikely, the key is to stay calm. In most cases, the discomfort is temporary and subsides within a few minutes to a few hours. However, bites from species with more potent venom may result in symptoms lasting up to a week.

Please be aware that I cannot assume responsibility for bites. Tarantula handling should be done at your own risk. In my 13 years of experience with these creatures, I have only been bitten once, by a species with highly potent venom. While the experience was painful, the symptoms had completely disappeared after a week.

Handle tarantulas responsibly, and always prioritize your safety and the well-being of the tarantula.
