Grammostola porteri — Chilean Rose Hair Tarantula

Grammostola porteri is the classic Chilean Rose Hair, and even though it has been reclassified under the regular rose hair group in the hobby, I still title and talk about this one as porteri because the look is so distinct. The porteri form has a beautiful purple-gray tone compared to the warmer red coloration of the RCF, or red color form rose hair. This is one of the absolute best beginner tarantulas ever, and true porteri are getting harder and harder to bring into the country.

Special Notices
This listing is for Grammostola porteri, the purple-gray Chilean Rose Hair form. While the taxonomy has shifted and many rose hairs are grouped together in the hobby, porteri remains very recognizable because it is much more purple compared to the red color form rose hair, which shows warmer red and copper tones.

This is an incredible beginner tarantula and a true classic. They are calm, hardy, slow growing, long lived, and usually very easy to keep. In my experience, this form does not kick hair or show defensive postures, making it one of the nicest display and first-tarantula species available. They are also getting rare to get into the country, so established specimens are becoming more collectible.

Care Details
🌡️ Temperature 75–85°F (24–29°C). Warmer temperatures usually mean faster growth because they molt more often, but this species is naturally slow and steady.
💧 Humidity Moderate to drier care works best. Keep good ventilation, avoid swampy substrate, and offer a small lightly moist area for younger specimens when needed.
🏠 Housing
Babies 1–4 oz deli cup with needle ventilation and enough substrate to settle in. FREE container at checkout IF requested; not included otherwise.
Juveniles Use an enclosure about 2–3x the spider’s body size with good floor space, dry secure footing, and a hide or starter burrow.
Adults Adults do great in a simple terrestrial enclosure with good ventilation, secure floor space, deeper substrate, a hide, and a water dish for larger specimens.
General Diet
🍽️ Crickets + roaches are the staple diet, including Dubia, Red Runner, and Lobster roaches. Babies take baby crickets or small roaches. If prey is too big, pre-kill it by crushing the head, leave it for the tarantula, then remove leftovers or bolus later. For super large specimens, an occasional pinky/hopper mouse or feeder lizard can be offered very sparingly; excess calcium can cause constipation/pooping issues. We never use pinhead crickets because they do not provide enough protein.

Safety Disclaimer
Safety Disclaimer: Tarantula bites are extremely rare, and there are no recorded human fatalities. Venom strength varies by species; Old World tarantulas are usually more potent than New World tarantulas, with Poecilotheria known for especially strong venom. Larger tarantulas may also deliver more venom.

If bitten, stay calm. Most symptoms fade within minutes to hours, though potent species may cause discomfort for up to a week. In 13 years, I’ve only been bitten once, and symptoms were gone after one week.

Handling is at your own risk. I’m not responsible for bites or injuries. Always prioritize your safety and the tarantula’s well-being.
